As well as providing a show- case for premium and small- batch brands, the event fea- tured talks by representatives from Glasgow’s West Brew- ery and a number of Scottish brands, including Carounn gin, Pincer vodka and Sheep Dip whisky. Bartenders were also given practical tips from Myles Cunliffe of Molecularmixology. co.uk, and heard presentations from German bitters producer The Bitter Truth and Adam Elmegirab of Aberdeen consul- tancy Evo-lution, a recent final- ist in the SLTN Mixologist of the Year Award. The event came to a head with the ‘four city shake-off’, where teams of bartenders from Edin- burgh, Glasgow, Newcastle and Aberdeen competed in three dif- ferent rounds (‘bartender mas-

that I know or work with, they generally have a London rep, a northern rep and a Scottish rep, so it makes sense to me to put shows into these markets. “It was only really last year

Andrew Scutts, who founded the show in 2007, pledged that the event would become a regu- lar fixture in Edinburgh. “It is a small show, but the

that I felt the show had got to the point that I was happy with it, to give me that sort of confi- dence to take it on the road.” Scott Gemmell, whose Glasgow-based consultancy LA Bartenders helped promote the Edinburgh event and organised the ‘four city shake off’, said the event went down well with Scottish bartenders. “It’s something that’s been desperately needed on the Scot- tish bar scene, so when Andrew approached me I was very keen to assist,” he said. “Just in that specialist spirit and liqueur area there hasn’t been something holistic in the Scottish sense for quite a while. No coffee machines, no wine, it was just purely spirits.”

A HOTEL on its own private is- land off the west coast of Scot- land has picked up a top food award from tourism body Vis- itScotland. The Isle of Eriska Hotel, Spa

and Island, north of Oban, took the Taste of Scotland Award at this year’s Scottish Thistle Awards, which took place late last month. It beat competition from the Del Amitri restaurant in Annan and the Ninth Wave Restaurant on the Isle of Mull to take the prize. Beppo Buchanan-Smith, man-

aging director of the Isle of Eris- ka, said he was delighted to pick up the title during Scotland’s Year of Food and Drink. “The award is a testament to the tremendous hard work and dedication of the staff, and their

desire to highlight our fantastic local ingredients,” he said. “Our customers have a huge choice of destinations but the quality of local ingredients, stunning scenery and welcom- ing staff make Scotland a stand- out choice.” Other winners included the

Seaview Bed and Breakfast on the Isle of Mull, which received the Extra Mile (small business) Award, while Hannah Norman, of Room With a View Seafood Restaurant was a runner-up in the Young Tourism Entrepreneur category. VisitScotland chairman Mike Cantlay said the Thistle Awards are an excellent way of recognis- ing the “dedication, innovation and hard work” of Scotland’s tourism industry.

A total of 16 Scottish Thistle Awards were presented at this year’s event at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre.

“Working closely with tour- ism businesses I believe we have

the potential to lead economic growth in Scotland,” he said.
