COTLAND’S world famous hospitality industry lifted the gloom over the economy when its fi nest venues and operators were honoured in Glasgow last month. Prizewinners engaged in a broad spectrum of licensed trade activity around the country celebrated as the 23 winners of the 15th annual SLTN Awards were unveiled by Tess Daly, co- host of BBC 1’s Strictly Come Dancing, at the fi ve-star Hilton Hotel on October 21.

The event, which took place before an audience of 700 in the Hilton’s Grand Ballroom, proved to be especially memorable for hotelier Peter Taylor OBE. Taylor took home the 2010 SLTN


Award for Industry Achievement, in association with Maxxium UK, on account of his long and successful career in the Scottish hotel sector. The Award was recognition, too, of his mentoring work with young people and new businesses, and in promoting the wider tourism and hospitality industries in Scotland.


It was a sweet moment for the operator, who defi ed the critics and numerous logistical challenges over the past two years to bring the stunning Blythswood Square hotel in Glasgow to life.


In a brief acceptance speech,


Taylor paid tribute to the team at the Town House Collection, in particular managing director Hans Rissmann, as he stressed that “great hotels are not all about investment in bricks and mortar, they are very much about investing in people”. Also celebrating an SLTN Award for individual achievement was Steven McLeod, the chief executive and

Tess Daly announces the winners of the 15th annual SLTN Awards, which climaxed with the presentation of the Award for Industry Achievement to Town House boss Peter Taylor OBE.


founder of the Aurora Hotel Collection. In the citation which preceded his unveiling as the SLTN Entrepreneur of the Year, in association with Bruce & Co, Tess Daly explained how McLeod had established a stunning portfolio of luxury hotels in Central Scotland, as well as business interests in limousine hire, design and house building, by the age of just 35. McLeod’s presentation came after the celebrity compere announced the results of 21 contested awards, which covered a broad gamut of trade disciplines. And it wasn’t just people and businesses in the big cities who walked off with the prized corkscrew trophies, as winners came in from Argyll, Fife


and West Lothian, as well as Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee and Inverness (see panel left for full winners’ details). The Awards presentation was the centrepiece of a packed night of entertainment enjoyed by guests. Before dinner, cocktails and beers


were served courtesy of Diageo Great Britain, and when the offi cial proceedings came to a close, hospitality was provided to the wee small hours in the Whyte & Mackay and Red Bull rooms. Special outdoor smoking shelters were laid on by Imperial Tobacco.
