Wine and food matching By Iain McPherson, Matthew Clark’s Scotland Wine Development Specialist (pictured left) Christmas menus are marked by the amount of different fl avours that make up the traditional festive dinner and this can make the selecting of wines an interesting challenge. Bottles of wine are good sharing options at Christmas and wine sales benefi t from the increased focus on food around this time.

Iain recommends a selection of quality wines from the Matthew Clark wine portfolio to some festive favourites.

Starters - Smoked Salmon Analivia Verdejo Pagos del Rey, Rueda

With its lemon-yellow colour this wine exhibits complex aromas of ripe soft peach and pear fruit, lemon and fl oral hints. Unoaked the palate is rich with white-fruit fl avours and minerally notes. Don’t just take my word for it, it has its own long list of awards, including International Wine and Spirit Competition 2008 Silver Medal “Best in Class”.

Nobilo Icon Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough

Typical zingy, elegant palate with pronounced gooseberry and nettle fl avours. This is not just another Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough, but a wine with an incredible array of fl avours, which helped it stand out from all the others to be announced “Best New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc”, by Decanter, winning the Regional trophy.

Main Courses - Turkey with all the trimmings Saint-Aubin, Louis Jadot

The wines from the chalky-limestone soil of this village adjacent to the better-known Meursault, Puligny-Montra- chet and Chassagne-Montrachet offer probably the fi nest value-for-money in Côte d’Or white Burgundies.

Vidal Syrah, Hawke’s Bay

The free-draining and stony soils of Hawke’s Bay’s famous Gimblett Gravels region, together with warm summer temperatures and a long ripening season, are ideal for growing top quality Syrah. Matured 18 months in French oak barrels giving a warm vanilla edge to the strong, powerful fruit and rich, yet supple, tannins.

Desserts - Christmas Pudding Concha y Toro Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc, Maule Valley

The Deal:

Buy 2 x 75cl of Taittinger Brut Reserve, Anna de Codorniu Brut Cava and Rocco Prosecco and receive a Magnum (150cl) free of charge!

Papaya, peach, apricot and mango combine well with honey and spice on the nose. The grapes are left on the vines to achieve the highest level of ripeness and the wine is matured for up to 30 months, not in oak, to develop its honeyed character.

Torres Moscatel Floralis Oro Catalunya Both Moscatel de Alejandria and Moscatel de Grano Menudo, better known as Muscat de Frontignan, are used to produce this rich fl avoured dessert wine. A very sweet, luscious wine that is a perfect accompaniment to all types of dessert. Not only does it taste great, but the beautifully decorated bottle is a real stand out in any restaurant.
