Crime across Mid Kent falls by 4.4%

CRIME in the Mid Kent area has fallen overall by 4.4%, ac- cording to Home Office figures for the year from October 2009 to September 2010. The total number of recorded crimes was 18,929 compared

to 19,808 the previous year. “This is a reduction of 879 crimes, which equates to just under 17 fewer victims of crime every week,” said Mid Kent area commander Chief Supt Matthew Nix. Crime fell in the following areas: Robbery -14.2%, from 127 offences to 109. Violent crime -9.5%, from 4,075 to 3,688. Criminal damage -17.6%, from 4,378 to 3,606. Vehicle crime -16%, from 2,457 to 2,064. Theft from the person -23.6%, from 144 to 110. Theft of pedal cycles -10%, from 340 to 306. Fraud and forgery offences -0.5%, from 621 to 618. Knife crime -20%, from 65 to 52. Other offences -5.9%, from 272 to 256. However, crime increased in the following areas: Burglary to homes – up 20.7%, from 760 offences to 917. Other thefts - up 6.9%, from 4,809 to 5,139. Burglaries to other premises (eg sheds, garages etc) - up

4.3%, from 1,406 to 1,467. Drug offences – up 16.6%, from 693 to 808. Serious sexual offences – up 23.4%, from 145 to 179. Other sexual offences – up 20%, from 65 to 78. Gun crime – up 11%, from eight to nine offences. Mr Nix added: “The good news is that violent crime, rob-

bery, criminal damage and vehicle crime all continue to fall. There were rises in burglary, theft and drugs offences during this rolling year period but we are already seeing results from initiatives we put in place last year in response to the in- creases.”

A NIGHTCLUB hosted hundreds of guests at a fundraising event for four Maidstone friends who plan to canoe up the River Yukon.

Guests at Liquid and Envy

were treated to an evening of en- tertainment, which included a professional catwalk show, a charity auction, magicians, dance groups and singing acts, with performances by The Hot Honeyz and Britain’s Got Talent 2008 finalists Milton Keynes dance troop, Nemesis. Guests bid for a range of auc-

signed X Factor T-shirt, complete with all 16 finalists’ signatures, hot air balloon rides, a cruise, cinema tickets, meals out, ad- venture days, spa days and many more. The canoeists – Nick Hunter,

Darryl Ratchford, Tom Raper and Nick Newell – hope to break a Guinness World Record in June when they canoe the River Yukon, from Canada to Alaska, to raise £2m for their chosen charities Help For Heroes and Marie Curie Cancer Care.
