Police job inspires second career in a world of crime

A CIVILIAN officer based at Maidstone Police Station has used her job as a police intelligence analyst to in- spire her first crime novel. Elizabeth Haynes’ “Into The Darkest Corner” fol-

lows the path of a woman who gets involved in an apparently ideal relationship that later turns sinister. The author says her job of six years has been an ideal backdrop to forging a career in fiction. She said: “In my job, I look at crime figures and try

to establish a pattern of offending so we can di- rect resources into certain areas. It is an ideal job for a writer as we are trained to look at crime creatively as well as in a fac- tual way.” In 2008, Elizabeth (39) wrote the

first draft of the book as part of Na- tional Novel Writing Month, which presents an annual chal- lenge to write a 50,000-word novel during November. A tutor on her creative writing course passed this on to publisher Myriad Edi- tions, who decided to release the book. She added: “It has always been an un-

reachable goal of mine to have something published, so it is amaz- ing that it is now happening. To see your name on the cover gives you a real buzz.” Elizabeth’s second book, “Under

a Hunter’s Moon”, will be pub- lished by Myriad in 2012. She is currently writing her third novel, but is happy to carry on with the day job. “I do love my job - the best I have ever had,” she said. “It’s constantly

changing and it never gets boring. I am hoping to keep the two side- by-side for as long as possible. “It is very inspirational in terms

of my writing because I come across a wide variety of people and, if I spent all day at home, I might lose the inspiration to write that I get from my job.” “Into The Darkest Corner” is

available in paperback for £7.99. Info - 01273 720000 / www.Myri- adEditions.com.

Penenden’s fascinating history brought to life

PENENDEN Heath has probably seen more significant his- tory than any part of Maidstone – now spotlighted in a new book. The “Penenden Heath Story” is written by Robin Ambrose,

who lives in the area, in Faraday Road, and who previously co-authored a suc- cessful book on Boxley. He points out the first recorded event

on the Heath occurred 10 years after the Battle of Hastings. King William’s half brother Odo, a bishop and Earl of Kent, was accused of taking land from the church and his trial on the Heath in 1076 lasted three days and caused wide inter- est. He was found guilty and the land was restored. In 1381 Wat Tyler gathered rebel

forces on the Heath before marching to Canterbury and then London where he was slain and the re- volt collapsed. The book con- centrates on more recent times but there is a fascinating chapter on public hangings on the Heath from 300 years ago until 1830. Residential development in this favoured area of Maid-

stone took off and there is interesting information about big houses and people of those times. Another chapter tells the story of the Convent of the Sacred Heart and successful school. DJF The 130-page book costs £8 (includes p/p) and is avail- able from the author: POBox 1290, Maidstone ME14 9PH.
