The Homeopath’s Corner Allergies, Sinusitis, Food Sensitivities and Toxicity: Relationship and Repair

by Cindy L. Griffin, DSH-P, DIHom., FBIH, BCIH, DCNT P

eople begin to complain of allergic reactions to pollens this time of year, as trees, grasses and flowers begin to pollinate. Others cannot eat certain foods due to sensi-

tive reactions. Still others are fighting sinus, asthma, or GI complaints that are triggered by mold, food and food addi- tives, animal fur and myriad other triggers. Food sensitivities which can create digestive discomfort or even serious bowel disorders are on the rise. In many cases, foods such as dairy, may be exacerbating the sinus, eye, ear or bronchial mucus production. An easy self-care fix is to try cutting out dairy from one’s diet for a couple of weeks. If there is relief, it tells us a great deal about the conditions behind the allergies. But allergens are merely the trigger, not the causation of these “allergic” reactions, which may result in sinus, ear or chest congestion and pain, or even gut pain, diarrhea or con- stipation.

What is the real causation behind these allergies and

intolerances? Homeopathic literature contains invaluable clues, as it records the toxic symptoms of mercury (and many hundreds of other individual substances) in less toxic, less vaccinated populations from yesteryear. Homeopathic Materia Medica reports that elemental and salts of mercury, aluminum and other heavy metals can each create inflamed, irritated mucus membranes, such as in the sinuses, bronchial and intestinal linings. Modern sources of mercury can include vaccines such as seasonal flu shots, and IV drugs preserved with thimerosal, which is 80% mercury by weight. Of course, the environment contains mercury vapor from industrial pol- lutants, and ground water is contaminated from decades of disposal of batteries, thermometers, etc. Fluorescent bulbs, including the new CFL bulbs contain mercury, and a broken bulb should be treated as a Hazardous Materials spill, and exposure carefully avoided. In Houston, we breathe almost 5X the amount of mercury air pollution of any other large city in the U.S. We also have one of the highest rates of allergies and asthma. Both modern scientific and 200+ years of home- opathic literature support the hypothesis that mercury indeed may increase allergies and food sensitivities. So does our clin- ical experience. Clients seeking heavy-metal detoxification often find that their food sensitivities, sinusitis, gut inflamma- tion, asthma and airborne allergies begin to reduce as their system cleanses itself.

Homeopathy Method for allergies and sensitivities is based on a two-pronged approach. In our experience, the most troublesome symptoms can often be relieved immediately – all without pharmaceuti- cals and their side effects. Our first approach is always relief of symptoms, whether it be pain, rashes or allergies. In addi- tion, we can often provide homeopathic remedies that help desensitize the system to specific triggers during the longer term detoxification process. Ultimately, reduction of the toxic factors known to cause irritation of the mucus membranes are the key to long-term reduction or even elimination of the allergic reactivity itself.

Ongoing detoxification should be a regimen for everyone

who eats, drinks, or breathes. But if you have allergies, food sensitivities or GI inflammation and discomfort, you might wish to make a more concerted effort through sequential homeopathy a priority in this New Year. The healing that comes from it can be a huge blessing!
