In a society inundated with advertising everywhere we turn, New Jersey joins states like Arizona and Colorado that allow advertising on school buses. A bill passed and signed into law at the beginning of January will allow school districts to place ads on the exterior of school buses only. The advertisements will have to be approved by both the local district and the state. But before any ads can make their way onto a yellow bus in the Garden State, the New Jersey State Board of Educa- tion must come up with rules and regulations concerning the size and age-appropriateness of the advertisements. Find out all the details at www.stnonline.com/go/768.

SAY NO TO NON-CONFORMING VANS Both FMCSA and NHTSA are joining the fight to ban the use of 15-passenger non-conforming vans

for school transportation. A letter sent out on Dec. 2 and signed by both FMCSA Administrator Anne Ferro and NHTSA Administrator David Strickland states that the vans “do not provide the same level of safety as school buses meeting NHTSA’s safety standards.” National Association for State Direc- tors of Pupil Transportation Services cheered the letter, encouraging all the association’s members to forward the letter to districts in their home states. WEB EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION’S KEVIN JENNINGS Following his appearance at the NAPT Summit in Portland, Ore., this past November, we reached

out to Kevin Jennings, the assistant deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools, to talk about what school bus drivers and transportation depart- ments can do to help combat bullying. Jennings touches on his own experiences with bullying and how the feds plan to give school districts the guidance they need to make sure their students are safe from this in the classroom, on the playground and on the school bus. In this month’s Web Exclusive at www.stnonline.com/magazine/web-exclusive, Editor in Chief Ryan Gray asks Jennings for more specifics on how federal training and federal money can help school bus drivers more ad- equately keep students safe from other students.
