C.E. White’s Quasi-Static Seat C.E. White, the first seat manufacturer to bring to market a quasi-static-approved
school bus seat, recently released its new Quasi-Static Seat that the company said provides greater access for students, drivers and emergency personnel. Major bus man- ufacturers have tested the new seat in their buses and reported test results in excess of 120 percent of stated force load requirements. Now available on the market, the Quasi-Static seat by C.E. White appears to be poised for any new seat belt legislation. Shortly after NHTSA quasi-static specifications were drafted in 2008 and prior to final
approval, C.E. White sent its existing seat with three-point belts, the Student Safety Seat, to an independent lab for testing. MGA Research Corporation tested the Student Safety Seat against the just-released specifications and found the seat passed the requirements. Knowing it had an existing seat frame with the capabilities to pass the final quasi-static specifications, C.E. White then set out to improve the product and to respond to the concerns of the market, specifically capacity, height, weight, egress and cost. Te resulting seat is 2.5 inches shorter than the Student Safety Seat, and a new
height of 24 inches above the seating reference point offers school bus drivers im- proved visual contact with students. Despite the change in federal standards that permits down-sized aisle spacing to 12 inches for seat backs measured at hip level, C.E. White seats maintain 15 inches of clearance. A redesigned frame and reduction of foam and vinyl resulted in removing 18 pounds. In a 72-passenger seat, weight
