Mecca Bingo gives cash boost to Marie Curie Cancer Care
Mecca Bingo has smashed its charity target for 2010, by raising more than £200,000 for its chosen charity, Marie Curie Cancer Care. More than 100 clubs across the UK took part in fundraising activities to help raise much needed money for the charity, which provides free nursing care for terminally ill people in local communities across the UK. Highlights throughout the year
included a sponsored body wax, an It’s a Knockout Tournament and a mass abseil. Clubs also organised cake sales, tombolas, themed party nights and a Blooming Great Tea Party, with all proceeds going to the charity. The total raised will be added to the overall amount achieved by The Rank Group PLC, which stands at £288,000 – £88,000 more than the original target. Lesly Clifford, head of communications for The Rank Group PLC, said:
“When we started out last year we knew the clubs had a challenge on their hands to reach the fundraising targets set for them. However, this didn’t stop everyone getting stuck in. “One club in Camarthen, Swansea raised more
than £6,500 for the year, exceeding their target by more than 300 per cent. “The fantastic amount raised is a result of the commitment and hard work of the team members at the clubs and the generosity of our customers. In a climate where everyone is watching the pennies it can be hard to get people to part with them, so this result makes it an even greater achievement.
“We’re looking forward to continuing to support Marie Curie Cancer Care throughout 2011.”
Fabian French, director of fundraising for Marie Curie Cancer Care, said:
“Mecca Bingo team members and customers have done a sterling job in raising funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care over the last year. They should be proud to know that the funds raised to date, by Mecca Bingo alone, will help the charity provide 10,050 hours of Marie Curie nursing care.
“We are thrilled to have their continued support in 2011 and look forward to working together to give more terminally ill people the choice of spending their final days at home.”
