“Last year I was approached by one of my clients asking whether there was an insurance product that could protect them if one of their customers was to win a large in-house jackpot should he decide to offer one.” says Darren.

“Having spent a number of years in the market, I wasn’t aware of a product which provided that level of cover however, I could see the commercial benefits for bingo halls if they were able to insure that type of activity and therefore offer large in- house jackpots to customers.”

“I set about identifying a panel of specialist insurers whom I could work with to develop a product that would provide this type of cover and with input from one of my then clients, Rob Garrard who is an

electing the right type of insurance protection is crucial to running a successful bingo hall with confidence, but how can insurance help increase revenue and does your business have the right level of cover?

Executive committee member of the Bingo Association, I managed to obtain agreement from an insurer”.

Naturally, Rob Garrard purchased the cover for his own business, Beach Bingo in North Shields, and decided he wanted to offer his customers a £10,000 jackpot to be offered on the last game on a Saturday night. If the game was won in 45 numbers or less, the prize was paid out.

Within two weeks of offering this substantial jackpot, Rob was already enjoying an increase of 20% in footfall and had already paid for the cost of the insurance policy by the end of the first night.

On the third week the prize was won with the winner calling in exactly 45 numbers!.

“Clearly the policy is subject to terms and conditions” says Darren “all of which are sensible and by no means onerous. Loss adjusters are appointed to validate any claims so it’s important that you set out

the parameters of your competition clearly and within the underwriting guidelines set, but I do believe this is a great way for bingo halls to increase their customer base in these tough times.”
