offers polite, cheery service, a friendly atmosphere and great value for money. No wonder it is popular,
with a regular clientele. Even at 10am (ie. after the breakfast rush), nearly half the 60-odd seats were occupied. The single menu on the
wall behind the counter lists every combination of the food items any self- respecting trucker would expect, with the large all-day breakfast at £5.70. However, it wouldn’t make
the ideal venue for a romantic evening – not least because it shuts at 3pm. Mickey’s Diner, on Bluebell
Hill, near Maidstone, is equally popular and similarly priced, but, unlike the Jungle, you wouldn’t feel out of place in a suit. It offers individual
laminated menus, a lovely, bright environment and excellent service. In case you are lost for conversation, it even boasts two large wall- mounted TVs. Again, Mickey’s offers the usual range of breakfast
items, but you can also get a wide range of other meals, such as vegetarian lasagne, steak and chips with vegetables and a choice of potatoes, or rack of BBQ ribs – starting at £5.90. Meanwhile, Kent also
boasts several Michelin- starred restaurants such as Read’s, near Faversham. Read’s is set in an elegant
Georgian manor house, surrounded by tranquil grounds, with lawns shaded by lofty cedar, weeping willow and horse chestnut trees. The restaurant's widespread reputation is founded on the distinctive cooking of David Pitchford, whose seasonal dishes blend herbs and vegetables from the manor's own walled kitchen garden with local game and fish fresh from the quayside at nearby Whitstable and Hythe. To complement the food,
an extensive wine list balances the French classics with a carefully chosen and imaginative selection from Europe and the Americas. Here, the set dinner of

eight choices, including a plate of organically reared salmon and smoked salmon served four different ways;

and cheeses is equally exotic. If you don’t mind waiting 20 minutes, you can enjoy a hot Grand-Marnier souffle with an orange compote, honey biscuits and honey ice cream. So whatever your preferred
taste and whatever your budget, you will find something to suit you in mid Kent.
