A ‘gentle’ art that strengthens children

There are many styles of martial arts in society today. All of them offer something of benefit to children who participate. One of the oldest and most skilled arts is Ju Jitsu. Literally translated this means the Gentle Art. This may seem strange considering it is a martial art and designed for self-defence. The ‘gentle’ word is derived from the fact that for the person practising the art, they can effect maximum force using minimal effort. The world today is a more

intimidating place to what it was 30 years ago. Ju Jitsu encourages children to be stronger in character, more confident in company and aware of their surroundings. More importantly it offers them the chance to be in a

dojo, or training area, where discipline and rules are an integral part of the art. Certain formalities and dress codes are followed, while terminology that shows respect to their peers and instructors is taught. However, ultimately, for children the art should be fun. Most junior classes will have a specific syllabus that is formulated for children. They are awarded for their hard work and effort by attending gradings to demonstrate their skills to the senior instructors. Successful demonstration

will gain them their next ‘obi’ or belt. This means in any class there is healthy competition, with most children striving to attain the next grade. As in any martial art, Ju

Jitsu is also very useful for adults in teaching them good levels of self-defence and overall fitness. When choosing a martial

art look for the MASA logo (Martial Arts Standards
