By Leslie Cunningham My hands wrap around this per-

fect little coffee mug. Keeping my fingertips warm, the smell of my French pressed coffee engulfs my nose, and for this moment, I am filled with gratitude for solitude, receiving, reflecting -- all because I received a coffee mug from Weav- erville’s Mangum Pottery. To me, this is not just a coffee It is an experience. When

mug.

I touch my mug, I am instantly reminded that this is my time to breathe in the fresh aromas and feel the texture of the gift. As I begin to breathe more slowly, I can feel my entire body relax. It’s in- credible to believe this piece that was once a block of clay can ab- sorb and relieve the anxieties of my day. Tis is exactly how you feel

when you enter the Mangums’ shop: uplifted and calm. Minnie, the shops greeter, meets you at the

front door to give you a welcoming puppy kiss. You will find owner Beth Mangum in front of her pot- ter’s wheel freely creating a bowl or an inspired cup. Ten you look further and see owner Rob Mang- um sitting on his tall man’s stool complete with his big grin and his hands around what looks to be an emerging work of their art. Tese thoughts captivate me as

my hand reaches further for the comfort and warmth my mug holds. My eyes close and I picture Beth at the wheel, her hands com- municating to the clay. Teir shop is filled with handmade pieces on display, each piece being bought and then gifted. Te pottery is made by one pair of hands, giv- en by another pair of hands and received by yet another pair of hands. Tis experience of relaxing,

slowing down, and being in the moment with my coffee is the heart of this Christmas season for

me. Intentional or not, the cof-

fee fuels my body while the cup that holds the coffee awakens my senses. Tis mug has reminded me that the best gifts are the ones you experience. Tis season, I am going to con-

tinue to be aware of what it is to experience - whether it be a store- bought gift or a warming smile, whether I am on the receiving or on the giving end. Te gifts that you fully put your hands around and feel every texture, see every color, hear every word spoken and then realize how it enhances your soul. Mangum Pottery is a special

place that sits on Main Street in Weaverville. Tis season I am aware how their pottery is indeed, a labor of giving. Editor’s note: Leslie Cun-

ningham is a photographer and resident in the Weaverville area. More about her can be found at theafterbelly.com.
