Buncombe County Marketing opportunities for farmers What does 2011 hold for farmers?

Te nation’s chefs, in a poll by the Na- tional Restaurant Association, cited locally sourced meats, seafood, and produce as the number one restaurant trend for next year. Te USDA’s 2007 Census of Agriculture showed that direct market opportunities for farm- ers—sales to restaurants and consum- ers—are increasing. And, in our area, Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project (ASAP) estimates that more than $30 million of local food was sold in 2010, a number that’s up three- fold from years past and is expected to continue to rise. To ensure farmers have the infor-

mation they need to thrive during this exciting time, ASAP is holding their eighth annual Marketing Opportuni- ties for Farmers (MOFF) conference Feb. 26 on the campus of Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa. Each

year, farmers, buyers, and agricultural experts from around the region con- vene at MOFF to share concepts and knowledge during a variety of work- shops. Tey leave with the business and marketing tools needed to make a lasting impact on the landscape of the Southern Appalachians. Tis year’s workshop topics include

structuring labor on the farm, manag- ing a CSA, selling to local restaurants, farmers market regulations, agritour- ism, business and marketing planning, beginning and advanced Quickbooks for farms, and much more. ASAP invites experienced and be-

ginning farmers, those seriously in- terested in farming, food buyers, and high school FFA students to attend the day of networking and training. Po- tential buyers of locally grown goods are also invited to attend or to network during lunch at no charge.

approved the grants Dec. 15. Te grants were made possible by ap- propriations of the N.C. General Assembly. Eleven grants, totaling nearly $3.5

million, will assist projects that cre- ate jobs by enabling the location or expansion of businesses in rural ar- eas.

In Cleveland County, $150,000

was awarded to install fiber optic cable at the site of an information technology company. Te project will create 15 jobs. In McDowell County, $9,500 was

awarded to extend water and sewer service to the site of a nonprofit, small-animal meat processing facil- ity. Te project will create one job. In the Town of Spruce Pine,
