recently came across a wonderful quote by Dale Carnegie. It goes: “The person who gets the farthest is generally the one who is willing to do and dare. The sure-thing boat never gets far from shore.”

As I look back at 2010, I am just blown away by the tenacity of specialty retail

entrepreneurs—who despite the rough seas of a tough economy, were “willing to do and dare” and came out ahead. As we approach the 30th anniversary of specialty leasing, one thing is clear: our industry is full of dedicated and industrious entrepreneurs willing to go the extra mile if that’s what it takes. Our industry has also embraced thousands of new entrants into the field—

entrepreneurs who took the recession as an opportunity to implement a total change of direction, a chance to try something new. With a cart or kiosk being just the perfect vehicle to try out a fresh idea, these new entrepreneurs successfully launched profitable businesses in the field. If you too are looking to join this illustrious group or have your sights set on

expansion, you don’t want to miss our annual listing of products that are just right for your specialty retail venture. This issue of SRR features our annual guide to hundreds of such cart and kiosk opportunities that will help you determine just the right product mix for your cart or kiosk business. You can also check out many of these product concepts in person at SRR’s annual

tradeshow, SPREE, which will again be held in Las Vegas this year from April 12-14. What’s more, SPREE offers a variety of informative seminars that will help you hone your business strategies and stay a step ahead of the competition. I hope to see you at SPREE! SPREE’s expanded international focus this year is testament to the fact that the

world is increasingly getting flat. These days, it’s not just products and technology that move seamlessly across borders—ideas do too. In keeping with our commitment to be the foremost voice of the industry, our coverage of international specialty leasing continues in this issue with a trained look at specialty leasing in Canada. Our retrospective on the state of airport retail also evaluates the status of a vibrant

and important segment of the specialty retail industry. As always, you will find a whole host of ideas in here—from new product concepts

to business strategies to merchandising makeovers. As we begin the new year, what new strategies are on your list of resolutions? What new shores will you explore?
