Samaritan ministries seek additional space North Buncombe
By Matt Tate A common euphemism, espe-
cially in the sports world, when de- ciding to build something is, “Te foundation is there.” In the case of the North Bun- combe Samaritan Ministries, it’s
not a figurative expression; it’s lit- eral. Ever since the Asheville-Bun-
combe Community Christian Ministries purchased the office on Weaverville Road from a modu- lar-home company, a foundation has existed on the property after the former tenant removed a show
home. Now, NBSM is hoping to raise
funds for the community to use that groundwork and build an ad- ditional storage facility. Te Rev. Dr. Henry Scoggins at
Reems Creek-Beech Presbyterian Church is on the NBSM advisory committee and hopes through ef-
forts with local organizations and churches to raise $15,000 - $20,000 to complete work before the end of the year. Scoggins said the group plans
to do most of the work themselves to limit costs and hopes to use the additional space to store furniture, clothes and possibly food. Te ABCCM’s downtown facil- ity is where most furniture is cur-
rently stored, Scoggins added, but a North Buncombe location would make the donation and reception process easier. “If we get something in this area,
it helps those looking to donate and those in need as well,” he said. Anyone looking to make mon-
etary or in-kind donations of build- ing materials can contact Mickey Black at 645-6141.
ESL classes available Te English as a Second Language Community Project offers free classes
in English language to adults and school-aged children. Childcare is avail- able for children under 6. Classes are held from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm on Monday at First Baptist Church, Weaverville. For more information, call 645-6720.
Flea market, barbecue Te North Buncombe BlackHawk Band will hold its annual flea
market and barbecue Sept. 11 at the Weaverville United Methodist Church Youth Ministry building on Main Street in Weaverville. Te flea market will be held from 7:30 am until noon. Te barbecue will be held from 5 pm - 7 pm with a short concert by the band following the meal.

Mites, Termites come up short
Te Mites and Termites of the
North Buncombe Youth Athletic Association football league came up short against Bethel on Satur- day (Aug. 21) while the Pups played Bethel to a tie in the teams’ season- opener. Dillon Pressley scored two touch-
downs for the Mites in their 22-12 loss to Bethel. Turnovers plagued the Mites’ chances. “We will just have to work harder to make sure we don’t beat ourselves,” Coach Bill Beck said.
www.weavervilletribune.com Joe Jonas had a 50-yard touch-
down run, Adam Metts had a 59- yard touchdown run and Christian King had a 62-yard touchdown run but it was not enough for the Termites in their 38-22 loss. Rayce Pickens scored two two-point con- versions. Te Pups scored on the last play
of their game to tie Bethel 8-8. Rain made conditions tough for
all the teams. Tis special to the Tribune.
