Class of 1980 reunion

North Buncombe High School

Class of 1980 will hold its 30th class reunion on Sept. 11. A section of bleachers will be

retained for the Sept. 10 football game, and a picnic will be held at noon on Sept. 11. Other events will begin 6 pm Sept. 11. Con- tact Mark Clevenger at Mark. Clevenger@verizon.net for more information.

(Aug. 20), but coaches have rea- son for optimism. The Cougars are coming off

of their most successful season in school history, making it to the Class 2-A state champion- ship game. “Even though Mountain Heri-

tage graduated some key play- ers last year, they are still a very strong team.

I’m sure they will

have another successful season,” BlackHawks Head Football Coach Carey Metts said. “I was very pleased to see us really com- pete with them throughout the game this year. Our boys gave a great effort and improved as the game went on.” In the first quarter of play,

Mountain Heritage wasted no time taking a quick lead on a 30-yard run by Matthew Kar- dulis. Only three minutes later, Kardulis scored again on a 64- yard pass from quarterback Ty- son Tomberlin. North Buncombe made its

scoring debut at the very end of the quarter when junior Colby Fox scored on an impressive 52- yard punt return.

Junior kicker

Eddie Piccirillo made the extra point, leaving the Hawks trail-

ing 14-7 at the end of the first quarter. The scoring pace slowed

down in the second quarter, with Mountain Heritage’s Drew Letterman scoring the only touchdown of the quarter. The Cougars lead 21-7 at the half- time break. In this third quarter, Moun-

tain Heritage took a 21-point lead following a short touch- down run by Eli Buckner. As the fourth quarter began,

the BlackHawks moved the ball with more success. Sophomore running back Cole Leighton made headway in the running game, culminating in a touch- down run to cut the lead to 28- 14.

Mountain Heritage disman-

tled any hope of a last-minute rally when Buckner ran in for a final Cougar touchdown with seven minutes remaining. Regardless of the game out-

come, Metts and his staff remain optimistic towards the team. “We are already far ahead of where we were in 2009,” Metts said. “I am disappointed that we lost but am not totally disap- pointed in how we played. The

boys played hard through most of the game and the mistakes we made are correctable. We have a very young team (with seven senior starters) but our staff is hopeful. We are looking for- ward to the improvements the team will make each week.” The BlackHawks finished

the night with 132 offensive yards. Leighton was the team’s leading rusher with 82 yards. Other offensive leaders included Christian Jewkes, Ben Shelton and Collin Lilly.

Leading the

BlackHawk defense was Corey Wilson with 10.5 tackles. Other defensive leaders included Lilly, Michael Bustle, Matt Griffin, Colby Fox, Michael Mindo and Matt Peek. North Buncombe will be

working extra hard this week in preparation for its rivalry game against Madison County on Fri- day (Aug. 27). The BlackHawks will host the annual “Battle for the Jug” and will seek to keep ‘the Jug’ in Weaverville for a fourth consecutive year. Kickoff begins at 7:30 pm. Editor’s note: Loren Metts is

the wife of NBHS Head Football Coach Carey Metts.
