Big Ivy Big Ivy Book Club

By Nancy Dillingham Te Big Ivy Book Club will meet

at 10 am on Saturday (Aug. 28) at the Big Ivy Community Center at 540 Dillingham Road to discuss “Burn- ing Bright” by noted Western North Carolina luminary Ron Rash. Te collection has been named a finalist for the Frank O’Connor International Award for books of short fiction. One of the stories, “Into the Gorge,” has al- ready won a place in the 2010 edition of “Te PEN/O’Henry Prize Stories.” Te collection contains 10 stories,

each compelling in its own way. Te aforementioned “Into the Gorge” demonstrates Rash’s ability to capture Appalachia and his use of memorable imagery. An older man goes illegally

into forestland formerly owned by his family to dig ginseng and comes upon the skeleton of one of his ancestors propped against a tree. Te story that begins the collec-

tion, “Hard Times,” contains what has become a sort of trademark for Rash–sudden acts of violence in the narrative–and, again, demonstrates his skillful use of imagery. A hun- gry young girl sneaks in a henhouse to steal and eat an egg and is snared in the cheek by a fish hook that the farmer has rigged up to catch what he thinks is the critter that has been steal- ing his eggs. Te title story deals with a suspect-

ed firestarter and his older wife’s deci- sion to cover for him out of her own desperate needs. Two of the stories, “Back and Be-

yond” and “Te Ascent,” take their point of departure from a current topic in fiction (Daniel Woodrell’s “Winter’s Bone,” for example): the devastating effects of meth on families and individuals. In all of the stories Rash is master-

ful at setting tone and establishing character and dark themes that have the reader pondering long after he has put down the book.
