EUROPEAN Manchester Terrier Happening Esther Schellenberg | Translation: Ingrid Carstensen

The much-anticipated 19th International Manchester Terrier Happening took place from July 9th to 11th, 2010 in Opatovice nad Labem in the Czech Republic. Approximately 70 Manchester Terriers from many different countries participated.

The first participants from nearby countries began arriving with their Manchester Terriers on Friday. A special area was made available for everybody to set up their campers, trailers and tents.

On Saturday the Happening events began on the large training area with various games and a race. The games consisted of two simple and two complicated exercises, two obedience drills and two games of chance.

The race, a classic discipline that cannot be left out of any Happening, covered a distance of 50 metres. The dogs were held at the starting line by a helper. They were the called, usually by their owners, from the other end of the track. When called, the dogs shot out along the track which triggered the automatic timer. Within seconds, each dog had reached the finish line.

On Sunday, the dog show was held. The judge was Carol Dunford from the United Kingdom and the ring assistant was her sister, Susan. The following classes were judged: puppy, junior, pet, open, champion, veteran and kennel. Some of the winners were:

Best Bitch and Best of Breed: Mia von der Spree Owners: Nikola and Sebastian Gross Kennel: Lothar Holst and Harry Fruth, Germany

Best male: Karf Kit ze Zamecke zahrady Owner: Olga Fuksova Kennel: Katharina Bartonova, Czech Republic

Kirsti and Erik Kahrs of Norway with the X-Pected Dine Mite Manchesters won the Breeder’s Class.

Following two action packed days, the overall Happening winners were announced in the big Happening tent. The winners were selected based on the total of all their scores for the games, the race and the dog show.

14 BLACK & TAN | SPRING 2010

The overall winner for the weekend across all disciplines was a Swiss bitch, Brennah vom Alpenrhein, owned by Monika Göldi and bred by Esther and Riccardo Schellenberg. The Happening winners (two and four legged) were thrilled with their win and accepted the lovely hiking prize, which was sponsored by the British Manchester Terrier Club.

The weather during the event was extraordinarily hot with temperatures of 38°C turning the Happening into an outdoor oven. The organisers set up an outside shower for use by both two and four legged participants. It gave everyone the opportunity to cool off. The temperatures did not stop the local caterers from providing great food, which was enjoyed by all.

Overall Winners of the 2010 Manchester Terrier Happening: Monika Göldi with Brennah vom Alpenrhein.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Lucie and Horst, the organisers of the 2010 Manchester Terrier Happening. They planned a super event in the true spirit of the Happening which is to bring together as many Manchester Terriers and their owners as possible from every corner of Europe. It was once again a relaxed and friendly get-together where everything was focussed on our unique and wonderful dogs.

20th International Manchester Terrier Happening will take place from July 8th to 10th, 2011 in the Werdenberg Region of Switzerland. This is the second time that the Happening is taking place in Switzerland and we hope to have a large turnout from all over Europe. We also extend a warm welcome to participants from overseas as well.
