H o u s i n g The Modernisation of RAF Single

Living Accommodation Wing Commander Mike Martin, MOD SP Policy (AFW) gives a brief overview

T

he poor quality of some of our single living accommodation (SLA) has been the subject of

considerable media attention over the past year or so. Te MOD has acknowledged that much more needs to be done to bring all SLA up to a living environment that offers home-from-home comforts rather than a bare room with few amenities. Good progress is being made and there is no doubt that new accommodation is significantly better.

Except for those under training, new or modernised accommodation equates to a single room with an en-suite shower-room, ample storage facilities, TV, satellite FM and telephone points and a 4ft bed. Communal snack preparation and utility rooms provide shared washing machines, tumble dryers, refrigerators and microwave ovens. As accompanying pictures indicate the new

accommodation is bright and airy with a modern feel. During the last four years the RAF have benefited from over 2500 new or modernised rooms and improved recreational facilities being delivered through SLAM and other SLA projects at Stations such as Brize Norton, Lossiemouth, Leuchars, Wittering, Shawbury, Cranwell, Coningsby and Honington. The good news is that projects currently in construction or development will provide over 1,200 more new bedrooms at High Wycombe, Brize Norton, Leeming and Waddington within the next 5 years.

Customer Attitude Surveys indicate that our personnel are delighted with the standard of modernised accommodation, but with a requirement to modernise a further 10,500 RAF bed-spaces, the MOD will need to maintain the momentum and continue to invest in SLA modernisation for the foreseeable future.
