Huge Challenge for the Recruiters

A

fter several years of low recruiting targets as the Service was drawing down in size, the RAF’s

recruiting organisation now faces the challenge of an increased requirement – well beyond ‘historic norms’.

The AOC, AVM Dick Garwood, has been provided with greater resources, including more personnel. In order to meet and sustain this level of recruiting for the next three years, volunteers from across the Service are being assigned to Recruiting Offices. And for the recruiters, the challenge is clear: select 4,559 good quality people this year and maintain that momentum for subsequent years. Air Vice-Marshal Garwood said: “In order to deliver our current range of capabilities to today’s standards we must increase our intake of new recruits. We need to

intensify efforts and work hard to achieve our goal in order to secure the longer term future of the RAF”.

By dividing the country into 7 regions, each commanded by a wing commander, the recruiters will make their presence felt more widely and ‘dominate the ground‘. Within each region, the respective RAF Stations and existing ‘high street’ recruiting offices will play a pivotal role. From these focal points, a network will be established with cadets (ATC and CCF), University Air Squadrons, Reserve Forces and educational establishments.

The RAF Presentation Team, the Student Awareness Team and the RAF’s Volunteer Bands will continue to play an important role in the wider marketing campaign, which receives a £4m cash injection under Pay Round 08.

Group Captain Gordon Bruce (pictured), newly-appointed Inspector of Recruiting, is the man charged with leading the campaign. He said: “The role of the Inspectorate of Recruiting has never been so vital. But everyone can contribute to the recruiting effort, by acting as ambassadors of the RAF. We need to engage more readily with potential recruits, influence stakeholders and make our presence felt”. The dedicated careers website is at www. rafcareers.com. 
