The Experience that is Married Life

pparently, your marriage is like your car because, by servicing it regularly, you can stop it
breaking down! I was intrigued by this analogy offered in the opening presentation at the first ever Marriage Course at Lyneham.
I must stress though, The Marriage Course is not counselling and it is not the ‘last chance’ saloon either. Rather, say the facilitators, ‘Couples can make their marriages even stronger by regular maintenance’.
Catherine and I are a married couple with
around 18,000 miles on the clock, (where 1,000 miles equates to one year) so I guess we are presently somewhere between our last oil change and our first major overhaul! We embarked on the course to find out how well all the life ‘tools’ would work in our lives.
In outline, the course consists of weekly workshops of two hours. Each workshop begins with a meal, in a romantic setting, followed by a video presentation. The presentation introduces the topic that the participating couples will discuss in a discreet and informal environment with the course facilitators on hand to provide guidance
whenever necessary. Group discussions do not feature at all.
Having completed the course we would recommend it as extremely worthwhile, and that the ‘tools’ we were given are very good, although we now need to find the time to practise using them! Seriously though, if you can find a marriage course on your unit or near you, you might want to give it a try – Catherine and I are certainly glad we did.
The course was also a great opportunity to make friends and share ideas about the experience that is married life.
