‘ED LINES Y

es it’s corny but I like it!

A warm welcome to the Players, Supporters and Directors from Eastwood Town. I hope they enjoy their visit to Damson Park and have a safe journey back to Nottinghamshire. Last season ended honours even between the two teams - home wins for both 2 – 1.

Matty West’s goal against Blyth in 19 seconds must rank as one of the fastest ever in the Conference – do keep it up Matt – it certainly takes the pressure off! We have included a match report on last Tuesday’s game at Stafford which is a stark reminder that things do not always go our way – we could easily have been 3 – 0 up at half time but came away with nothing - that is football I am afraid.

It was Jimmy Greaves who coined the phrase “it’s a funny old game Saint” – first we have Martin O’Neill leaving Villa, whilst at the other end of the spectrum it looks like the 125 years of Bromsgrove Rovers is at an end. How can you let a Manager of that ilk simply walk away and how can things at Bromsgrove have got so bad that the fans have started another club (Bromsgrove Sporting) and the Council has leased the Victoria ground to them. So it’s Midland Combination Division 2 now with a ground capacity for probably 2000! When I moved from Yorkshire to Birmingham in 1994 I lived near Bromsgrove whilst house hunting and saw quite a few mid week matches there. They had been runners up in the Conference in 1992 / 3, winners of the Bob Lord

Trophy in 94 / 95 and winners of the Worcester Senior Cup in 1995 and 1996. You just wonder how it all went so wrong. Makes me very glad we have stability in our club at all levels.

Included in the programme tonight are the fixtures of the Birmingham and Solihull Rugby Club – all on Friday or Sunday. Let’s hope the pitch can support the extra usage because it makes sound financial sense to welcome the Bees to Damson Park and from the community point of view what could be better than having our premier football and rugby clubs under the same roof at our splendid venue. Personally I have never been to a Rugby match in my life and don’t understand the rules or the logic – but that could change!

Good news that Premier Sports are considering televising 30 live Conference Premier games a season. It would apparently be broadcast on Sky channel 433 and cost £6.99 per month. I suppose the North and South Division teams will only feature in Cup games – a

pity but I guess, understandable.

In my programme notes last week I mentioned that week by week we would introduce a “Fact File” on each of the players. This kicks off with Theo Streete in the Gloucester programme on the 28th August. Before he left for the “smoke”, however, I was lucky enough to have some time talking to Jake Edwards and lest we should forget him we are publishing his “file” in full tonight as a thank you for his 2 seasons with us. Jake was not only a very talented player but a real student of the game- it makes very interesting reading.

Also tonight we have our first “Non League” Quiz : I cannot guarantee that all of these new initiatives will be winners but if we do not try them we will never know – Feed back will always be welcome.

Keep the faith Clothears
