There are 2 local derbies this week – Shirley Town host Earlswood on Wednesday evening whilst Hampton are at home to Knowle on Saturday
LOCAL SOCCER SCENE
Both The Baker Joiner Midland Alliance and the Imosports Midland Combination started their league fixtures last weekend. Highgate had the daunting task of travelling to last years runners up Coalville (98 points but behind Barwell). Last season this fixture saw Highgate lose 7 – 1 but the new look team looked certain on Saturday to hold on to a 1 – 1draw only to concede in the final moments of the game. Anthony Pritchard scored for Highgate in the 2 – 1 defeat, but Mark Burge’s team can be optimistic after a sound performance.
Knowle have elected to drop from Mid Com Premier to League One so that they can play again at their Knowle ground albeit without floodlights. ( last year they ground shared with Studley finishing a creditable mid table). On Saturday they entertained Coton Green with the majority of the first team squad being unavail- able. The final score of 2 – 1 was courtesy of goals from Steve Jones and Jimmy Anderson.
Earlswood were held to a 2 – 2 draw at home to Kenilworth. It was end to end play for 90 minutes, but 2 goals from Andy Nichol proved just not enough at the final whistle. Shirley Town faired much the same against Stretton Eagles and despite 2 goals from David Baker were pegged back to 2 – 2 draw as Stretton equalised in the 85th minute. Hampton were held to a 0 – 0 draw at home to the West Midlands Police.
