FSA SPEAKS ON
CLONED COW ISSUE The finding is as a result of an inquiry into milk from a cow produced from a cloned parent. It identified that two bulls born in the UK were from embryos of a US cloned cow. Both bulls were in fact slaughtered but it did not stop the meat from one entering the food chain. Tim Smith, FSA chief, claimed that any suppliers would require approval under European law, yet he had "no concerns" about the safety of such milk or meat. Of the two bulls, the first was slaughtered in July 2009 and its meat entered the food chain. There is speculation that the animal came from an Inverness- based farm. On 27 July 2010, the second bull was slaughtered, but its meat was stopped from entering the food chain. The FSA have claimed that they have not not been asked to consider any cloned meat cases for the EU. Mr Smith, of the organisation, also said that European authorities are still deciding how to regulate cloned food products.
