Plant upgrade preserves Denca’s relationship
with Duerr’s Automation and control systems specialists Denca Controls Ltd of Widnes, Cheshire have been commissioned by Duerr’s, one of the market-leading producers of jams, marmalades and honeys, to facilitate the upgrade of its honey processing production line. In response to increasing demand for its best-selling range of honeys from health-conscious consumers and the supermarkets that serve them, Duerr’s needed to add a second melting chamber to increase capacity at the plant. Denca’s brief consisted of upgrading the existing system by adding controls, modifying software, configuring and integrating new hardware into the existing Duerr’s process, installing all necessary cables and putting the new system into service. Process diagrams were drawn up and interpreted as a control philosophy programme employing a Siemens S7 300 PLC controller and a Siemens MP 270 HMI screen and new components built into the existing panels. Then, once the system was up and running, a rigorous testing procedure was implemented to ensure that the new system would run as smoothly as the honey itself. PP Logipal has added fast growing Wagg Foods Ltd to its diverse and expanding client portfolio. Based
near Thirsk, North Yorkshire, Wagg Foods is a family owned company and is the UK’s largest independent supplier of quality dry dog food. Looking at how it could reduce transport miles across its supply chain and overcome the effects of an unreliable pallet delivery service into its site, which caused ongoing problems in production areas, Wagg switched to IPP Logipal’s dependable yet flexible one-way trip pallet solution. IPP Logipal’s pallets, which are perfectly suited to Wagg’s automated palletising processes, are used to deliver a range of pet food products to customers across the UK. The service also supports the company’s commercial activities in Europe. Overall well in excess of 100,000 pallets trips are made per annum.

FLEXOGRAPHY ADDS SUSTAINABILITY IN PACKAGING PRINTING
Some market segments have been even more dedicated to the conversion to flexography for flexible packaging. They recognize that flexo has a strong advantage in terms of cost, time to market and flexibility for a printing quality which has been improving during the last recent years. In 2010, DuPont Packaging Graphics ran an updated Life Cycle Assessment aimed to measure the environmental benefits of using thermal technology
during the flexographic plate-making process compared to the traditional solvent process. The updated results validated the findings of the original study. For plate processing, digital thermal (with PET developer material) has a 63% lower non-renewable energy consumption and 52% lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to digital solvent plate imaging process for a 0.067 plate (1.70 mm thickness).
