GREEN CLEANING TIPS
There are many simple ways to make housecleaning “green,” which is better for the environment, and better for you, too.
Furniture Polish
In a spray bottle, mix 1/2 teaspoon veg- etable or olive oil and 1/4 cup white vinegar or lemon juice. Shake well and apply a small amount to a cloth.
Air Freshener
Skip the store-bought air fresheners and instead try boiling cinnamon, cloves, or any other herbs or spices you love on the stovetop. Also, consider plants. They may not make your house smell different but are good for filtering interior air naturally. Any broad-leaved green plant, such as peace lily or philo- dendron, will do.
Antibacterial Spray 1 cup water
20 drops pure essential oil of lavender Pour the water into a spray bottle. Add the lavender oil and shake to blend. Spray on the surface and let sit for at least 15 minutes before rinsing (al- though rinsing is optional).
Mold and Mildew Prevention Prevent mold and mildew in the bath- room easily. Keep a spray bottle filled with 1 cup water and 2 drops of tea tree oil. Spray and let sit for 10 minutes, then gently wipe clean.
And don’t forget these household basics . . .
Vinegar Vinegar, diluted in water, cleans glass, appliances, tile, countertops and more. Use 1 part vinegar to 4 parts water. It also can be used as a natural fabric softener. Simply add 1 cup to the rinse cycle when washing clothes.
Lemon
Lemons smell great and springtime- fresh, and they also cut grease and whiten because they’re acidic. Plus, a lemon comes in its own nifty cleaning container: its skin. You can rub a lemon on copper, bronze and aluminum to make them sparkle.
Good Old Soap and Water The antibacterial and antimicrobial “cleaners” that many people think are necessary, especially during cold sea- son, don’t clean hands any better than soap and water. They also add to the risk of breeding “super germs,” bacteria that survive the chemical onslaught and have resistant offspring. The FDA has found that antibacterial soaps and hand cleaners do not work better than regular soap and water, and should be avoided.
So clean “green” and make a difference in your world today!
