MANAGER’S NOTES GRAHAM TURNER

Tonight’s opponents, Charlton Athletic, are one the really big clubs entering the Carling Cup at this stage which makes the tie very attractive. For us the pressure is off the players to gain league points and as very much the underdogs we can enjoy the occasion. The challenge is there for the players to pit their wits against a very good opposition, buoyed by the victory over Bradford City last Saturday we should be looking forward to the game with a great deal of confidence. Last Saturday’s match was a very good advert for League 2 football, a big crowd creating a good atmosphere helped to make it a decent game between two sides intent on getting the ball down and passing it. There is no doubt that the bookmakers are right to make Bradford favourites for the title as they are a big club with plenty of experience around the club both on and off the field, therefore to start our season off with a victory against them was just what we wanted. I don’t normally praise individual players, victories are earned by the entire team ,however on this occasion I must pay tribute to Jake Robinson for scoring out three goals and combining well with fellow striker Matt Harrold. I understand that Jake wasn’t always a crowd favourite last season, but he has impressed me with his pre-season performances and thoroughly deserved his place in the starting line-up. He has displayed a great enthusiasm for the hard work required both when we have the ball and when the opposition have it. He has good ability which was evident in the manner in which he took his goals. More performances like Saturday’s will make him a firm crowd favourite and help us to achieve our target. Having praised Jake I would also like to pay tribute to the team as a whole, having gone a goal down in the first half we displayed character not only to pull ourselves back into the game, but battled through a very difficult period of the game when we went down to ten me following Kevin McIntyre’s sending off. A good days work which earned us our first three points. A long way to go, but there was enough promise to give us plenty of scope for optimism for what lies ahead. In the meantime let’s enjoy what promises to be an evening of quality football.
