CAPTAIN’S COLUMN IAN SHARPS
The game against Bradford City saw us pick up a very good win although I was disappointed to concede early doors. From a personal point of view and as a team as we want to try and concede as few goals as possible over the season. We did show great character to come back by playing good football and scoring three goals.
Bradford City are one of the favourites so there are many positives that we can take out of the game. We came back by continuing to play good football, we kept a clean sheet after we went down to ten men, we kept the ball well and all the lads worked extremely hard. We have got a lot of pace and creativity going
forward, but what is even more pleasing is the way everyone tracked back when it was needed. It’s important to put in the hard work when we are going both ways. When you look at all the attack minded players in the side then some may think we might leave ourselves open, but by everyone tracking back and working hard that was not the case.
I don’t think you can have much better a game than Robbo did on Saturday and he will be buzzing since then and long may it continue for
him. His work rate over pre-season has been exceptional and a lot of teams we’ve played sit with men in the midfield which means him and Matt Harrold have had to work back a lot of the time. It was just rewards to get his three goals, it was good to see him track back the full length of the pitch in the first half, but that might have had something to do with him giving the ball away. Tonight’s game against Charlton Athletic is one to look forward to as they are a team with a good following; they play a good standard of football and have a good standard of footballers. They obviously come here as favourites, but it’s a game where we really have nothing to lose. We have a good outside chance getting the result that we all want if we can get through this one then there is the chance of a game against the bigger Premier League sides so something for the lads to aim for and hopefully a bit more money for the chairman. We want to keep that winning mentality going throughout the season and it certainly is a habit that you can get into. On the flipside losing games can become a habit so we have to make sure we push on tonight and then look forward to Saturday’s trip to Macclesfield Town.
