8 THE TRIBUNE - May 27 - June 2, 2010 Money Matters

by Michael Creasman, CFP

When

selecting a financial advisor, investors should make every effort to meet

the candidate in person. Not only does a face-to-face meeting allow investors to assess the character of the person who proposes to handle their financial investments, it enables them to fully discuss their financial goals and risk tolerance. It is also important for investors to ask about what services are offered and how much they can expect to pay for them. It is also important that, while working with a financial advisor, the investor’s funds be held by an independent financial institu- tion. Tat means that an investor should not be writing checks to a financial advisor but to a third-party company or a custodial firm. HINT: Investors should take the

time to look at quarterly statements and monitor the performance of their investments, not just take a passive role.

and Noah Sherrill finished first and the team of Bryson Riddle and Daniel Magley finished second in the Western Region. team to start with a virtual cash ac- count of $100,000 and the students strive to create the best-performing

portfolio using a live trading simu- lation. Tey work together in teams, practicing leadership, organization, negotiation and cooperation. In building a portfolio, students

research and evaluate stocks, and make decisions based on what they’ve learned. Teams trade com- mon stocks and mutual funds from the NYSE, Nasdaq and AMEX exchanges; earn interest on cash balances; pay interest if buying on margin and pay a commission on all trades. McKinney and Sherrill accumu-

lated more than $26,000 in virtual net earnings during the 10-week run of the game.
