Student receives veterans’ scholarship

Veterans Affairs recently awarded North Buncombe High School se- nior Molly Catherine Anderson a full four-year scholarship. She received the scholarship by


meeting all the necessary require- ments. She was in contention be- cause her father, Worth Anderson of Weaverville, received a purple heart for his service in the Vietnam War. Anderson will be attending West-


ern Carolina University to study nursing.

second-annual block party from noon to 10 pm on July 4 at the practice soccer fields at North Bun- combe High School. There will be two stages of music featuring Yo Mamma’s Big Fat Booty Band, Afromotive, BAYU-


KA, Traveling Bonfires, Galen Kipar, Chris O’Neill, Jay Sanders, Red Hot Sugar Babies, Richard Schulman and others. Lyric poets Pasckie Pascua, Roberto Hess and many others will read and hold a Poetic SLAM.


There will be a story-telling competition, Asheville International Children’s Film Festival will have an exhibition and sports and movement demonstrations will be ongoing throughout the day. Booth spaces are open for vendors at $50 for a 10x10 space. Churches, non-profits and civic orga-

Optimist Club fundraiser benefits area youth

combe Optimist Club held the 26th annual Big Cash Everybody’s Dream fundraiser dinner and drawing at the New Bridge Baptist Church Recreation Hall. Te fund- raiser is the Optimist Club’s largest of the year and this year the pro- ceeds will go to the aid and devel-


opment of the youth in North Bun- combe County. Last week the club awarded approximately $11,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors at North Buncombe High School for four-year college programs and community colleges. Te Optimist Club is celebrat- ing its 40th anniversary this year


of serving children in the North Buncombe community, having been chartered in 1970 and its 40th year of partnering with citizens and businesses to promote the North Buncombe youth through numer- ous academic and social venues.
