erville’s Arbor Day festivities on Sunday (May 16) at the Weav- erville Fire Station as both town and state officials helped the audience celebrate the occasion. The town received its 20th Tree City USA award and an addi- tional, cherished Tree City USA Growth Award. The occasion was marked with music provided by talented local student groups and the presentation of numerous awards. The North Buncombe Middle
School Jazz Band opened the cer- emony with the National Anthem and provided music later in the ceremony. Mayor Al Root read the Arbor Day proclamation. N.C. Rep. Susan Fisher praised Weaverville for having won the first N.C. Tree City of the Year award in 2009. Eric Meuke with the N.C. Division of Forest Re- sources presented the Town with its latest Tree City USA awards. Robin Smathers sang “Trees for America.” The Weaverville El- ementary School Chorus also provided enjoyable music for the occasion. Students who were winners of
the Tree Board’s Poster and Poet- ry contests received their awards, with Griselda Ruis reading her first-place winning poem. Others recognized were Samuel Manske,
