Baseball team races to unbeaten start
By Matt Tate Te North Buncombe Middle
School baseball team handed two con- ference rivals back-to-back shutouts this week to continue its unbeaten start to the season. Te BlackHawks blanked Owen
10-0 on Tursday (April 15) and fol- lowed that up with a 16-0 pounding of Valley Springs on Monday (April 19). Coach Adam Atkinson said the
team’s hard work and dedication is evi- dent on the field. “We’ve really tried to come into this
year that we’re the best team we’re go- ing to play. We have to start acting like it,” he said. On the mound, Alex Destino and
Dylan Fox have given the team a stout tandem. “Alex Destino and Dylan Fox have
turned this team around as far as pitch- ing goes,” he said. “And then offensive- ly, from our first to ninth hitter, we can all hit.” North Buncombe is 8-0 this season.
NBHS tennis

Rain helps in battling blaze
By Matt Tate Firefighters battling a 200-acre
fire that was the likely the result of a lightning strike near Barnards- ville were aided by some much- needed rain Tuesday (April 20). Chief Kevin Mundy of the Bar-
nardsville Fire Department said his crews assisted in efforts with the United States Forest Service. Te blaze broke out about a mile away from Craggy Gardens near
the Blue Ridge Parkway. He added no structures were in
the path of the blaze that began Saturday (April 17) near the top of the ridge and worked downward. Aircraft battling another blaze
in Mitchell County near the Ten- nessee border assisted as well. Te North Carolina Depart-
ment of Environment and Natural Resources reported the blaze was 60 percent contained Wednesday afternoon (April 21), up from 30 percent earlier in the week.
