Hensley, age 83, of Mars Hill went home to heaven this week. She was born on Monday May 10, 1926 and passed unexpectedly at her earthly home on Tuesday April 13, 2010. Melba was preceded in death


by her parents, John & Zenobia Boone, brothers, Lester, Arthur and Mack Boone, sister Harriett and her loving husband for almost 50 years the late Jole Garrett Hen- sley who passed on April 14, 1998. She is survived by Brother Calvin Boone of Bowman, SC, and Sister Margaret Boone of Mars Hill. She leaves behind her beloved


children: Johnny G. Hensley and wife Linda of Burnsville, Garrett Hensley Jr. and wife Lanell of Mars Hill and Catherine Cordell and hus- band Roger of Weaverville. County, she was a faithful member of Bethel Baptist Church and de- voted Sunday school teacher for children and adult ladies for over 30 years. She lived and breathed the Word of God and shared her faith with all she met. When Gar- rett was alive they went to many lo- cal revival meetings each summer, visited the sick and showed love to their family and friends by shar- ing their harvest of fresh strawber- ries and vegetables Together they ran Hensley Farm, pick your own strawberries for over 20 years.. The world was her flower garden; she saw beauty in trees, flowers, and even weeds. Mama was proud of her children,


grandchildren, and great grands. She loved us and we loved her very much. She will be missed greatly. We celebrated her life with a fu- neral service on Saturday April 17 at 2 pm at Bethel Baptist Church. Revs Troy Rogers and Ed Rice officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Nephews served as pallbearers. Visitation was on Friday, April 16, 2010, from 6 pm - 8 pm at Blue Ridge Funeral Service Mars Hill. At other times the family will be at the residence; 147 Straw- berry Lane, Mars Hill.

James Talmadge Ledford Mars Hill - James Talmadge


Ledford, 84, of 1089 Old Mars Hill Hwy. passed away Sunday, April 18, 2010 at Madison Manor Nurs- ing Center. He was a native and lifelong resident ofMadison Coun- ty, the son of the late Holden and Mada Chambers Ledford. He was also preceded in death by a sis- ter, Louise Marshbanks, brothers; Roy P. Ledford and Harry Ledford. James joined the Navy in the sum- mer of 1943, in Detroit, MI., attend- ed Navy Boot Camp at Great lakes, IL. attended Navy Gunnery School at Gulf Port, MS, and participated at sea in a number of WWII Pa- cific battles: New Guinea, Saipan, Philippines, Iwo Jima, Okinawa. He served on ships such as the USS Mansfield, USS Darby, USS Bowles, USS Piocchio, and USS Shangri La, served at sea through much of the early years of the Cold War. He retired as a Chief Petty Of- ficer in the summer of 1963, after 20 years of service. James started a paint store which expanded into the automotive business for 44 years. In the early 1970’s he was recruited by the leaders of the Madison County Democratic Par-

ty, even though he had never held any political or public office, to run for County Commissioner. He won, beginning a long and distinguished career. During his initial tenure as Commissioner, he served sixteen years, fourteen of which, he was Chairman. He was defeated in 1986, but was returned to office of Commissioner in 1990, and served as Chairman from 1992 to 1994. In addition to serving as the leader of Madison County Government for a period in excess of 20 years, he served as a Chairman of the Board of Blue Ridge Mental Health, Re- gion B, the Land of the Sky Re- gional Council of Government and on numerous State advisory boards. After leaving public office, he continued as an active political leader, serving as Chairman of the Madison County Democratic Party, and as recently as 2008 serving as the Madison County Co-Chair of Governor Bev Perdue’s campaign. He helped establish the county’s library board, health board and child development board; the first landfill in Madison County, a group homes for the mentally handicapped, daycare center for kids, a nursing home in Mars Hill, senior centers across the county and a housing authority. Although an avid life-long Democrat, his fa- vorite statement was “politics does not matter; we are going to do what is right for the people.” Surviving are his wife Nina Bald-
