counselors and administration. Students have created a variety

of earth-friendly projects that will be on display Thursday night dur- ing a parents’ night at the school. Other area events include an

Earth Day festival from 10 am to 6 pm Thursday at Blue Ridge Community College in Flat Rock.

Going green? Here are some energy-saving tips

* Test your refrigerator seals – Close the refrigerator door on a dollar

bill. If the dollar bill can be removed while the door is closed, the seals may be damaged. Cold air and moisture around a closed door can also signal a leak. * Reduce water-heater buildup - Drain a quart of water from the water

tank every three months to remove sediment that impedes heat transfer and lowers the efficiency of the heater. * Use the trunk - Reduce drag by placing items inside the car or trunk

rather than on roof racks. A roof rack or carrier provides additional cargo space and may allow you to buy a smaller car. However, a loaded roof rack can decrease your fuel economy by 5 percent or more. * Computer misconceptions - Many people believe that equipment

lasts longer if it is never turned off. Tis incorrect perception carries over from the days of older mainframe computers. Tere is also a common misconception that screen savers reduce energy use by monitors; they do not. Automatic switching to sleep mode or manually turning monitors off is always the better energy-saving strategy. More tips can be found at eere.energy.gov/consumer/tips.

ishes of the new space include natural wood siding, vaulted ceil- ings with exposed beams, accent lighting, large bay doors that open onto the lawn and covered front and side terraces. The new event center, like the

previous barn, offers panoramic views of the mountains. M7 Event Solutions is manag- ing the event schedule.
