Breathing on the Job: Yoga for working stiffs

Times are tough, and weíre all work-

ing harder than ever. For many of us that means weíre stuck at a desk for longer hours than ever. Desk work is hard on the body par-

ticularly when working with comput- ers. Most of us ignore the early warning signs of physical damage: the headache, the bleary eyes, the stiff fingers, the pain in the neck. But combine minor muscle stresses like these with long hours and in- creased mental tension, and we may find ourselves in crippling pain. I’m a yoga teacher, and many of my

Come as you are.

students start a practice because of stiff- ness and pain caused by computer work. Tey think yoga stretches can help them. But yoga isn’t about stretching, really.

Primarily it’s about breath. What happens at the desk? We forget

to breathe. We slump. We tense up. Busi- ness pressures donít help. Under stress we breathe more quickly and irregularly. Want to have a better day at work? Just

breathe. Take a moment to think about your

breath. Inhale fully into the very bottom of your lungs, then take another sniff or two of air. Hold the breath for a few mo- ments, then slowly exhale. At the end of the exhale, purse your lips and blow a few more puffs, until your lungs are really empty. A couple of breaths like these will

cleanse and refresh. In the moments when you focus on

your breath, you may discover that cer- tain muscles are tenser than they need to be. As you breathe, expand these muscles with a few simple stretches. Interlace your fingers, and lift your

hands above your head, like youíre push- ing against the ceiling with your palms. Stand up. Interlace your fingers behind

you, and raise your extended hands as high as you can. Slide back your chair. Put both feet

flat on the floor. Lift your head as high as you can and then lean forward and down slowly, like you mean to brush against the edge of the desk with your hair. Keep bending until your chest in your knees; then round your back, let your arms hang, and release your head to flop forward. Remember to breathe. Te breath is

what cleanses. Te breath is what heals. Donít strain to stretch further. Te stretch simply improves your ability to breathe.
