April 1 - April 7, 2010 Vol. 8 • No. 13 Woodfin • Weaverville • Barnardsville Fifty Cents DNA sample breaks open cold case

By Matt Tate Woodfin police made an arrest

Tuesday (March 30) in a case that

has been mystifying investigators for nearly five years, thanks to a DNA sample from an inmate. Det. Don Guge said warrants were served on Antonio Cedillo

Morales on charges of first-degree rape, first-degree burglary and first- degree strangulation in relation to an incident at a Woodfin residence in July 2005. “Every lead was followed, but we

were unable to come up with a sus- pect,” Guge said of the initial inves- tigation. Tat was until several weeks ago

when authorities received notice that a DNA sample taken from Morales when he was first incarcer- ated for a DWI charge from Bun- combe County in 2008 matched samples taken at the home of the victim in 2005. Combined with other evidence, investigators were

able to pinpoint Morales as the pri- mary suspect. Morales, 38, was jailed in Brown’s

Creek Correctional Institution near Charlotte and was scheduled to be released in September 2012, accord- ing to the Department of Correc- tions Web site. He was transferred to Buncombe County where Guge served warrants on him. Guge said he is not sure whether Morales will remain in Buncombe County while the case is being processed. Te department received a

CODIS hit from the State Bureau of Investigation notifying of the DNA match. CODIS stands for Combined DNA Index System.

County Sheriff’s Office arrested Goins on March 20 on a charge of felony bigamy. Greensboro resident Jeanne

Stout claims she was still married to Goins when he married Marsha Fisher in April 2006. A number listed for Stout was

disconnected. Stout’s complaint at the Bun-

combe County Sheriff’s Office states Stout told investigators that Goins and Fisher were married in April 2005, but Fisher said it was one year later. Goins, 49, married Stout in Feb- ruary 2000 in Dillon, SC. Accord-
