wonderful example of the blessings and victory that can come from per- severance. Te church was first es- tablished in 1935 by a small group of Christians who had attempted to start the church on two previous occasions. It was this third successful effort that gave the church its name and founding heritage.

“Our church name origi-

nates from Genesis 26 when Isaac was digging his father’s wells,” Pastor Steve Rhinehart explained. “Te third well he found was named Sheba and meant oath, covenant and good fortune. Tis third effort is symbolic of how our church truly began.” Te Rev. Alfred Bailey and the Rev. O.C. Massey were the church’s founding pastors. Rhinehart and his wife Pat have

been ministering at Mount Sheba Bap- tist since 1985. Originally from Hay- wood County, Rhinehart was called to full-time ministry in 1974 shortly after his personal and radical conversion to Christianity. He served as pastor at Bingham Heights Baptist Church in Asheville for 10 years prior coming to MSBC. Troughout the years, the ministries

of MSBC have been located at their current location on New Stock Road. Te existing worship facility was first built in 1952 and has undergone sev- eral building expansions since. In 1993, MSBC opened the doors

of Mount Sheba Christian Academy. Two years later, in 1995, the school was able to purchase the Old Flat Creek School. Many are familiar with the school’s location in part because of the large white cross that stands atop its facilities off of I-26 and Jupiter Road. “Tat beautiful cross is just one of many reminders of God’s faithful- ness to our church and school,” Rhine- hart said. Te Mount Sheba Trift Store is a

primary outreach ministry of MSBC. It is located in the Old Flat Creek

School gymnasium and is open from 8 am to 4:30 pm Friday and Saturdays. Proceeds from the store help fund the school, making scholarships available to all students interested in attending. Te thrift store is also a source of min- istry for others in need in our North Buncombe community. Another unique ministry of MSBC

is its historical leadership of the “Meet- ing on the Green.” Tis week long evangelistic outreach took place each summer in Asheville’s downtown square. It was held for 19 consecutive years up until 2007. MSBC is also very committed to world missions and currently supports over 20 missionar- ies around the world. Church sup- ported evangelism projects have also been held in such places as Trinidad, Romania and Jamaica. Rhinehart and the people of Mt.

Sheba are very passionate about their faith.

“One of the most important

things I could ever say to our commu- nity would be that salvation through Jesus Christ is available to anyone.

If

God can reach down and pull me out my gang and drug-filled life many years ago, He can reach you wherever you are too. His power can complete- ly change you. Whoever you are, no matter what you have done, God still loves you and can use you if you will only let Him!” For more information about the
