Auto Injuries: There are many types of injuries that can take place during an auto accident. The types of injuries can range from none at all, to extremely severe. Let’s eliminate some of the misconcep- tions of auto injuries first, then explain why receiving treatment is vital. First off, many people think because you are in a “slow moving” or “low impact” accident that you should not or would not get injured. The fact is, you are just as likely if not more to get injured in these types of accidents. The reason is, during these crashes you are moving in a direction at low speed, then quickly change direction causing your body to contort and receive shock. Higher speeds keep you moving in a generally forward direction, which reduces the direction change and shock. Of course head on and “T-bone” crashes pose exceptions. Many people involved in minor or less serious accidents don’t even realize they are injured at all. This is common because symptoms generally don’t appear until days and in some cases weeks later. This is why getting an exam as soon as possible following an accident is very important. Recognizing symptoms is also very important. These symptoms can present as headaches, loss of memory, nausea, neck and back pain (mild or severe) stiffness, or even tingling in the hands and feet. Lastly, Florida is a “no-fault” state, this means that if you are in an accident weather it’s your fault or not, you are covered by your insurance for your injuries by law. If you are not at fault your insur- ance premiums cannot be raised.
Treatment: Neuromuscular Therapy is one of the most effective methods of treatment. What is Neuromuscular Therapy?
Neuromuscular massage therapy is defined as the re-education of a muscle’s normal function. The concept behind this massage therapy is when muscles spasm, which can be caused by a number if different direct or indirect stimuli, the spasm takes place in a very localized part of the muscle, not the whole muscle. Treatment of that spasm is the process of neuromuscular massage therapy. Medical Massage According to the American Medical Massage Association, Medical Massage is: "A system of manually applied techniques designed to reduce pain, establish normal tissue tension, creating a positive tissue environment and to normalize the move- ment of the musculoskeletal system. Muscles are covered by a sheath of con- nective tissue called fascia. (Imagine the clear membrane on skinless chicken breast) With injury, this fascia can become kinked or wrinkled causing pain and discomfort. When a muscle spasms in the body, (like with whiplash) blood flow to that area is severely decreased, sometimes stop- ping altogether. When the blood flow is diminished, oxygen necessary for the muscle to work properly is also decreased, causing a buildup of lactic acid. This causes a similar feeling to the one felt after a long extreme workouts and muscle soreness. PNF (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation) which is the practice of stretching a muscle with resistance from the patient until the muscle is fatigued and stretches back to it’s normal function is also used.
Nutrition’s role: Nutrition plays a major role in healthy muscles and tissue. With the proper nutrients, maintaining a healthy body can mean the difference between hurt and injured. The old adage “you are what you eat” is about as true as it gets. The way this works is quite simple; food that we eat is digested, and the nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream. Blood then circulates throughout the entire body delivering the nutrients to all tissues, keep the healthy parts healthy, and healing the unhealthy areas. Eating right affects more than just recovering from injury, it is the basis of overall health. No amount
of exercise can com- pare to healthy eating. The African-American community as a whole is more likely to suffer from some of the most preventable diseases. For example; type 2 diabetes is not only pre- ventable, it’srreversible altogether. Based on the reason for the de-
velopment of the disease, a proper diet combined with moderate exercise can reduce the risk by about 10x. High blood pressure is another preventable disease. Although there are studies that show hy- pertension can be passed down to our off- spring, it is much more likely to be passed through poor eating habits of our parents, grandparents and many generations of an improper diet.
Supplements: There is an overwhelming amount of African-Americans who don’t even take vitamins on a regular basis. If asked why, many say they don’t remember to take them, while others say they don’t like pills. The excuses go on and on. The truth is… we must take charge of our own health and the health of our children in order to maintain the status we have come so far to attain. Healthy eating is not just a fad, it’s a way of life! You have many choices, please choose to take good care of your mind, body, and soul.
