Sustainable Communities in the Works
T
wo new, sustainable communities are being
planned for Southwest Flor- ida. Both will emphasize green living and neighbor- hood interaction. Bella Vita will constitute 1,500 residences—homes,
duplexes, quadraplexes, condos and rental apartments—on 650 acres adjacent to the intersection of Desoto Boulevard and Immokalee Road in East Naples. Organizers have identified two partners for the project, the owner of the property and a local LEED-certified green builder, and are currently seeking a developer. Construction is expected to begin in 2012. Features will include a large organic vegetable farm, citrus
grove and orchard that will supply most of the food for resi- dents, including organic dairy, meat and eggs; solar-powered golf carts and bicycles within the community; bus service powered by homegrown, bio-diesel fuel to transport residents to local destinations on a scheduled basis; and no toxic chemi- cals or materials used for yard maintenance or on an18-hole golf course. All homes will be built green, using sustainable and envi-
ronmentally friendly building materials, with none more than two stories, and will be solar-powered with a 40-year equipment lifespan. All freestanding homes will use rainwater collection systems for showering and cooking needs.

The Naples Sustainable Cohousing Community (NSCC) is seeking to create a community of up to 35 private homes, both ownership and rental units. It will be planned and managed by the residents and designed to encourage interaction with pe- destrian-friendly streets, front porches and extensive indoor and outdoor common areas, including organic vegetable gardens. Organizers say individual houses will be small because
many activities will take place in a Common House that will include a large kitchen where residents take turns cooking for the community, dining room, laundry, pool, offices, guest and game room, TV lounge and exercise facilities. The NSCC, which is currently considering a location, builders and developers, will incorporate many sustainable design and construction elements to lower building and ongoing energy needs.
NSCC holds meetings online and at Food & Thought Organic Market and Restaurant in Naples at 2132 Tamiami Trail N. For more info, visit the NSCC Facebook or contact Kris Isenberg at 239-450-1462 or
