WHEN we started to get reports from our readers that the February/March issue of Pitchcare magazine was ‘falling apart’ due to a problem with the binding, we took the difficult decision to have the magazine reprinted. Difficult, because we were
aware of the additional paper required in environmentally sensitive times. However, for our readers and advertisers, it was something that just had to be done. Even though our printers, Gemini Press, have ISO 14001 environmental management certification and support the Woodland Trust, the Pitchcare team agreed that we should give something back to nature, and planting a tree seemed like the perfect idea.
Managing Director, Dave Saltman, proclaimed that the Indian Bean Tree was his favourite tree and, from that moment, it was always going to be an Indian Bean Tree. Editor, Laurence Gale was
tasked with finding a suitable specimen and somewhere to plant it. Nobridge Nurseries, from Telford in Shropshire, came up with a 15ft high Catalpa bignoniodes complete with rootball and Wolverhampton Science Park, where Pitchcare’s offices are based, agreed that it could be planted in the grounds of the complex.
The planting ceremony was carried out by Laurence, with the

assistance of Pitchcare’s web monkey, Alastair Battrick. When fully grown the tree will
be twelve metres high and bear distinctive white flowers and broad leaves. The Royal Botanical Gardens
at Kew describe the Indian Bean Tree thus: “Despite not coming from India or producing real beans, this tree from the USA is popular wherever it has been introduced. Its resplendent white flowers and the distinctive gnarled trunk of older specimens has made it a favourite in parks and gardens”. Distinctive, gnarled and older specimens? Sounds like the perfect choice for the Pitchcare staff!
Literally a ground-breaking machine combining great productivity with a working depth down to 275mm.
