Volunteer and Part-time staff the Backbone of the Industry
Welcome to the second of our Pitchcare Magazine supplements dedicated to Training and Education.
It could be said that volunteers and part-time staff are the unsung heroes, the backbone, of amateur sport. My own dad “looked after the pitch” for the local cricket club for years without any formal training or qualifications, just knowledge that he’d picked up along the way and, to be honest, the club couldn’t have survived without him! However, the world’s a different place these days
Christine Johnson, Pitchcare Training Coordinator
and it’s generally recognised that clubs must acknowledge their responsibility for ensuring that people doing work on their behalf are protected from accident or injury by being properly trained. Even the most modest club should have some provision within its budget for basic training for their grounds and maintenance helpers, if only to be able to demonstrate a willingness to accept a “duty of care” in the event of any claim for damages or compensation – not just from their own people but from members of the public who have access to their pitches or grounds.
TRAINING & education For further information, visit the new
Training and Education section of our website,
www.pitchcare.com/training.
For details of courses coming up in the near future, go to the “Booking Now” section.
There are colleges and training providers throughout the UK who offer short courses on a range of turf machinery and equipment, and a general guide to what’s on offer and prices can be found on the training pages of the Pitchcare website,
www.pitchcare.com/training.
I would particularly like to bring to your attention a series of Pitchcare one-day courses on basic turf maintenance, specially designed by the Pitchcare experts, which we shall be holding during the winter at various venues depending upon demand. The courses will cover either winter or summer sports and will demonstrate how to use machinery and tools safely and effectively. These are ideal courses for volunteers and part time grounds people. To register your interest, email me,
chris@pitchcare.com. Over recent months we have built up working partnerships with many training providers, including colleges, throughout the UK, so whatever your training requirements there’s a good chance that we can help find a course to suit you. If you can get a group of 4 or more together, we can arrange a bespoke course, probably at your own premises. Whatever your training requirements, we look forward to hearing from you!
For information about our bespoke courses for groups, or for training for individuals, contact Christine Johnson, Pitchcare Training Coordinator,
