Scotts know the ‘Facts’

SCOTTS has taken the innovative step of putting its entire Turf & Amenity team though a new, industry- recognised training scheme, in a bid to provide customers with the highest level of expertise and service. The Fertilizer Advisers Certification and Training Scheme (FACTS) is independent, non-statutory and recognised by the fertilizer industry, Defra and the Environment Agency. It is accepted as a successful means of setting standards, training and accrediting the continuous professional development of those providing nutrient management advice. Turf & Amenity product manager

Simon Barnaby said: “Until now, the FACTS course and examination was mainly designed for agriculture and commercial horticulture. Working in conjunction with the

trainers David Godsmark and BASIS, and with input from the STRI, we have created the first FACTS course tailored specifically for the turf and amenity industry.” “It was an extremely tough five-day course, culminating in an examination and viva. All eight T&A managers passed, which is great news, as we’re the only company in the industry who’s entire T&A team holds this qualification. This significantly strengthens the service we can provide to our customers.” The FACTS course is designed to ensure that candidates can provide a high standard of advice to turf managers and amenity managers on all aspects of nutrition. It has a leading role to play in the environmental implications of turf grass nutrition, because advisors qualified in FACTS can give turf manager the most up-to-date information and advice on how best to protect the environment when using nutritional products.

Bespoke vehicles for Uni Campus

THE Estates Services department at University of Wales Swansea has recently taken delivery of a bespoke electric vehicle for mail deliveries around the Singleton Park campus. The Cushman Diabline van, manufactured by Ransomes Jacobsen Ltd of Ipswich, has been sourced and supplied through Birds Vehicle Solutions of Cowbridge in the Vale of Glamorgan and has been adapted specifically for use by the mailroom at the university. Due to the undulating nature of the campus complex it has been fitted with a high ratio rear axle to aid its hill climbing ability and a Fast Charger which in just three hours will charge the batteries to 80% of their full capacity. Ian McPherson, Assistant Deputy Director of Estates commented, “The University’s

environmental policy seeks solutions to environmental issues by adopting sound principles and best practice relating to sustainable development. We are committed to integrating environmental management policies and practices into every level and every department of the University.” “In order to achieve this we aim to reduce the use of fossil fuels through improvements to energy efficiency and the substitution with renewable energy sources. The purchase of the Cushman Diabline dovetails neatly into this policy. It has been registered for road use, but because it is electric powered it requires no Road Tax or MOT.”

Take a break to admire your turf…

BRIDGEWATER Paper Company’s ‘turf guys’ proved to be a real show-stopper at Hillhead 2005, the international quarrying and recycling show. Maintenance engineers from the company manufactured skeletal frames and assembled the bodies from hessian sacks filled with paper crumb, fertiliser and grass seed. They were made to promote paper crumb, a

fibrous mixture of wood fibres and china clay. It’s supplied by Bridgewater as a soil improver to quarry restoration sites which are lacking in soils but which have a supply of process waste, overburden

or other inert material. These are successfully combined with the paper crumb to create soils suitable for the proposed after use. Seed was supplied by British Seed Houses.
