the course. Peterbilt is definitely a horse with a mind of his own and doesn’t like to be micro-managed all the way around the course.
Guy Thomas: Man on a Mission Guy Thomas has ridden at the Olympics and the World Cup
finals, but this year he may have a September to remember with appearances virtually assured at the World Equestrian Games and a ride in the 2010 Pfizer $1,000,000 Grand Prix at Hits-on- the-Hudson. He is the man behind Willow Tree’s horse show operation, based in Woodside, California. The son of two suc- cessful riders and trainers, Graeme “Butch” and Lu Thomas, both FEI World Cup Finals participants themselves, he is ably building on the legacy of his parents.
Meet Peterbilt Peterbilt, or more affectionately known as ‘Pete’, is a 17.2h, 10
year old Holsteiner stallion. Truly a “home-bred” horse, Peter- bilt was conceived, foaled, raised and trained by Guy’s parents at Willow Tree’s farm operation based in Burson, California. His breeding is LioCalyon x Jeribos, by Concorde. Lio might have two offspring at the WEG; Peterbilt, and fellow New Zealander

The Triple Crown of Show Jumping tour was originated by Pickwick Equestrians and Diamond Mountain Stables several years ago. Leone
Katie McVean’s mare, Dunstan Delphi. While the New Zealand team is well represented by LioCalyon’s offspring, it should be noted that he is currently standing at Barbara Ellision’s Wild Turkey Farm in California, approximately 6,900 miles (11,000 km) from New Zealand. Jeribos was Guy’s Young Rider Championship horse that earned him an individual Silver Medal, and countless Championships. His name was derived from the trucks Guy has always
liked and enjoyed driving, and Peterbilt certainly lives up to his name: big, strong, and built like a truck. Aside from flirting with any mares in sight (a trait he ably carries on from his sire), he is most often led by two people at a time, as similar to his namesake, he is quite willing and capable to drag a single person around as easily as if they were an empty trailer being pulled by a powerful truck. Watching Peterbilt enter an arena is reminiscent of John
Travolta strutting down the street during the opening scene of Saturday Night Fever. Confident. In control. Self assured. And always wanting to be the center of at- tention. Along with the attitude, he has the ability. He excels in the big money classes, and from class to class, and show to show, he always has plenty of energy.
Record of Consistency When Guy and Peterbilt team up, they are almost always in the money, and this year is no exception. A freak accident on the second day of Week 1 at HITS Thermal on one of Guy’s other mounts landed him in the hospital. Battered, bruised, and lucky to narrowly escape a serious injury, Guy returned to the winter circuit with a strong determination to succeed. And succeed he has. He and Peterbilt are currently in 2nd
$1 Million Grand Prix rider rankings and a virtual shoe-in to qualify for the largest prize money class of the year.
Canada & East Coast Bound Guy regards Peterbilt as his go-to horse. With trips to
Spruce Meadows, the HITS Pfizer $1 Million Grand Prix and WEG later this year, they have the opportunity to excel in some of the most prestigious classes of 2010, and as an added bonus for Peterbilt, perform in front of some of the largest crowds. Guy Thomas has been one of the most successful Grand Prix riders on the West Coast this year, and with Peterbilt, this Olympian and World Cup Finals rider intends to give the top International competi- tors a run for their money.
Get ready East Coast; here come the New Zealanders, led by Guy Thomas and Peterbilt!
