CALL THE S.W.A.T. TEAM
by Kevin Lobkovich '12
, the Benet Academy Law Club
welcomed Detective David Hakim, a team leader of the DuPage County Sheriff ’s Special Operations Team. Detective Hakim, in full S.W.A.T. uniform, explained the responsibilities and duties of a S.W.A.T. officer, which can be summarized in one sentence - “When you don’t feel safe you call the police, when the police don’t feel safe they call S.W.A.T.”

CHRISTMAS DRIVE A SUCCESS
Because of our efforts to raise money and help out local families and charities, Benet was able to raise $54,500 this year – a huge sum and a new school record. Certainly, though, the success of the Drive cannot be measured in pennies and dollar bills alone. Even if our total sum was not a record breaker or were to have garnered several thousand less, Christmas Drive 2009 would still be considered an overwhelming success not only because we helped to make the holidays a little brighter for some needy families but also because so many of the Benet community came together for a common cause and purpose to help others. There are not many other high schools in the area that could achieve such a feat, and the Christmas Drive is one more reason why we should be proud to be Redwings.
Mike Macaluso ’00 Benet Faculty and
Student Government Moderator
About 80 students learned the history of S.W.A.T. in DuPage County along with the selection process and skills necessary for becoming a S.W.A.T. officer. Detective Hakim also related
many of his personal experiences including time spent in New Orleans after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. S.W.A.T. teams from around the country first secured the area for medics and then rid the city of looters and other criminals. Detective Hakim ended his presentation by fielding numerous questions from the students.
“When you don’t
feel safe you call the police, when the police don’t feel safe they call S.W.A.T.”
Detective Hakim's presentation was coordinated by Law Club President, Eric Behna '10 and Law Club moderator and DuPage County Sheriff's Officer, Deputy Ron Smith '89.
