In July of 1969, while enjoying his day off, Don dove off a houseboat and changed his life forever. He hit a waterlogged wooden cable reel that had been discarded by a tugboat and was lurking about 3 ft. under the surface. At that instant, Don was permanently paralyzed from the neck down. He didn't want to spend the rest of his life sulking over what could have been. He decided to go forward and to learn as much as he could about computers and technology for the disabled. With the help of a counselor from the Illinois Department of Rehabilitation Services, Don was able to overcome his disability as it related to working and getting on with his life. Over the past 17 years, he has become an internationally recognized Assistive technology expert. In May of 2002 he was invited to China by a group of medical professionals to assist in teaching them about assistive technology for their newly developing national rehabilitation system. Don was the President of Assistive Technologies, Inc. He and his associates have been featured in a 4000 word story about his company on the front page of the Wall Street journal. He was a member of the board of directors for Chicago's "Joni and friends" area ministry. Don's personal "bottom line" is that of seeing as many people with disabilities "whistling while we work" as he so strongly professes. To this end, he "put his money where his mouth is" to do everything within his realm to create employment opportunities. He worked one-on-one in the trenches directly with his disabled clients. He and his wife Helen gave of themselves in many ways to support their company during difficult times, thus keeping the hope alive. Stories about Don have appeared in Wired Magazine, on CNN, NBC, Fox, the USA Network, Cranes Chicago Business, Chicago Sun-Times, DuPage Financial, and Chicago Tribune. He was the Illinois State 1994 winner of the Blue-chip Enterprise Initiative Award, sponsored by the United States Chamber of Commerce, Nation's Business Magazine and Connecticut Mutual Insurance Co. Don was also nominated for the Emerging Entrepreneur Award by the DuPage Area Association in 1994 and 1995. Last year, he and his company were individually nominated for New Freedom Awards.
