RON SMITH '89
Deputy Ron Smith of the DuPage County Sheriff's Police ('89) was presented with the Law Enforcement Medal of Honor (2009) from the Sons of the American Revolution for his efforts during a teen suicide attempt.
In April of 2009, Ron handled a call involving a teen runaway. Te teen was eventually caught and transported to the hospital for an evaluation. Ron provided the teen with his phone number in the event the teen ever needed additional assistance.
Te following day the teen called Ron from his cell phone while the teen was standing on the roof of his house with a knife up to his neck. Police were on the ground trying to convince the teen to put down the knife and come off of the roof. In a cry for help, the teen called Ron and told him he was going to commit suicide. Ron was able to talk the teen into put- ting down the knife and coming off the roof. Te teen was transported to a medical facility where he was able to obtain the professional help he needed. Ron followed the teen's progress through his rehabilitation and reports the teen is now on a positive path.
