Maryland-based Farrier Offers

New Way to Battle Laminitis

Frederick, M - In the upcoming laminitic season, Doug Anderson offers a new way to combat the deadly disease. The Steward Clog—developed in 2003 by Dr. Michael Steward of Oklahoma—is an outstanding protocol for dealing with laminitis. Having studied directly with Dr. Steward, Anderson has become one of the only Maryland-based farriers to successfully add the Steward Clog to his practice.

“I’m excited to be able to offer the Steward Clog to my clients. My hope is, that as we enter the laminitis season, both veteri- narians and fellow farriers will utilize me to help their clients’ horses,” says Anderson. The Steward Clog is shaped out of ply- wood and EVA material to custom fit the individual horse’s foot. The clog provides frog support and sole relief, which is impera- tive in helping these horses recover. This design also allows the horse to find each foot’s center of weight bearing that is most

comfortable for that foot at that time. “Last fall, my mare Betsy had a severe attack of laminitis. Thankfully, Doug was able to apply the Steward Clogs and she was dramatically improved almost immediately,” recalls horse owner Charlene Cherry. “And now, months later, she’s going better than she ever has before. I’m convinced that the clogs saved this mare’s life.”

Based out of Frederick, Maryland, Cer- tified Farrier Doug Anderson specializes in lameness and performance. Although Doug resides in Maryland, he currently shoes hors- es in New York, Texas, Florida, Pennsylva- nia, Ohio, West Virginia, Delaware and North Carolina. He regularly consults with a variety of veterinarians and farriers for solu- tions in problematic horses. In short, Doug loves a challenge and his practice has evolved into primarily working with lame- ness and maximizing performance in horses.
