Junior Golf 2009
By Peter Fraser
2009 proved to be another highly successful year for the
Junior Section of RLGC. The Captain for the year was Sam Cooper, who, with his infectious enthusiasm and keen sense of humour, proved to be a great role model for all the Junior members and a fine ambassador for the club at the many Junior events in our area. With over fifty Junior competitions and events, the Club’s
one hundred plus Junior golfers were well catered for. Apart from our usual programme and Wirral League matches, the Club hosted Junior teams from both Harlech GC and Royal Mid-Surrey GC, both of whom have offered an away fixture in 2010. A quote from the Junior Co-ordinator of Royal Mid- Surrey perhaps sums up the esteem in which RLGC is held in the golfing world – “Thank you for the part RLGC played in making our tour of the North West the most successful Royal Mid-Surrey junior tour ever. We had a fantastic time and very much enjoyed the opportunity to play on the famous and historic links of Royal Liverpool.” Our Junior Week, held in the last week of July, was again
the highlight of the year, especially for the younger juniors, and was, as always, very well supported. A competition was held every day, coupled with coaching
from the Pro Staff and the week concluded with a family Barbeque and presentation ceremony which was very successful. Many thanks go to John Heggarty and his staff for their time, patience and good natured support during the week. 2009 saw the Pinnington Pot being contested on home
ground with Junior teams of four from RLGC, Royal Birkdale GC and Formby GC facing a strong challenge from the Swedish Juniors of Falsterbo, Ljunghusen and Flommen Golf Clubs. RLGC’s team consisted of Sam Cooper, Matt Sudderick, Becky Bell and Alex Power and after a week of intense but good humoured competition, the result was England 24 points, Sweden 26 points. So the trophy sadly remains on Scandinavian soil! Individually, 2009 saw our Juniors succeeding away from the links of RLGC. Georgina Sudderick won the Elizabeth
Chadwick Trophy for the best nett score in the Cheshire Junior Championship. Tom Boys, Cheshire Junior Boys’ Captain, represented England Boys versus South Africa and Canada and finished as the top points scorer and has been named in the England Men’s ‘A’ squad for 2010. Perhaps most noticeably, he was RLGC Club Champion for the third successive year – a great achievement! We wish him well in carrying the Club’s hopes for the Brabazon on home ground this year. Finally, sincere thanks must go to Mrs Audrey Briggs, the
Junior Organiser, without whom the Junior Section would not flourish so well; to Mrs Pam Shennan for her help on Junior Competition days; to the Catering Staff; to the Greenkeeping staff; to both the Starters for their support throughout the year; and, above all, to all the Junior Golfers themselves for making 2009 a vintage year. Here is to success and great golf in 2010. In 2010 the Junior Captain will be Nick Sudderick who
will, undoubtedly, carry on the traditions and standards of our Club.
