The 2006 Open Championship
By Peter Dawson, Chief Executive, The R&A
The 2006 Open Championship was a great success by any measure and did nothing but add to the view that we had been too long away from Hoylake. As a club, Royal Liverpool truly rose to the occasion and
the members and staff could not have been more enthusiastic or helpful. The links, strengthened by some remodelling, provided a stern test, Universally respected by the competitors, and to have identified the best player in the world as Champion leaves little more to be said. The R&A left the Championship that year in no doubt that
Hoylake was firmly re-established on the Open “rota” and determined to return in early course. Against this background, we are absolutely delighted to have announced 2014 as the year of the next Hoylake Open
and may I record our gratitude that Royal Liverpool has again agreed to host the Championship. The R&A very much appreciates how disruptive an Open can be to Club members which makes the outstanding support we receive from Royal Liverpool even more special. Our experiences in 2006 have led to further modifications
and improvements to the links, which are approaching completion, and we can look forward with confidence to again crowning a Hoylake Champion of the highest quality. There are only four years to go and I, for one, can’t wait.
Roll on 2014!
Peter Dawson, Chief Executive R&A
